Troop 174 and Friends from Troop 5, Congratulations on a successful Camp Minsi experience 2008. This is a brief overview of our activities and accomplishments throughout last week.
Sunday night’s rains kept the Staff-run campfire indoors. We got a chance to meet the Staff members that would serve as our merit badge counselors. Since Monday night’s “Activity Night” was postponed due to rain, the Staff held “Movie Night” instead. A few of our Scouts enjoyed the movie “National Treasure 2”. Tuesday night we enjoyed homemade chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Since we shared campsites with Troop 166 from New Jersey, we invited them to join us. Everyone took turns turning the crank. Wednesday was a rather rainy day and all evening activities were cancelled. Thursday night we again joined Troop 166 with them providing the man power preparing our chili dinner. That night some of our boys participated in the evening “Night Hike” and “Astronomy Observations”. Friday night was the camp-wide, Troop-run campfire.
MERIT BADGES: Combined, our 18 Scouts earned a total of 60 merit badges. Additional Accomplishments: Each morning, Scouts had the opportunity to take part in the “Frigid Froggie” swim at 6:30AM. Mr. Krauss, Jeremiah, Brian, Greg, and Dillon all earned the award by attending all five sessions.
Dillon also went on five of six daily hikes held by the staff to earn him the “Indiana Jones” award.
Jeremiah, Brian, and Greg earned their “Totin Chip” card allowing them to use a knife. Jeremiah and Brian also earned their “Fireman Chit” card teaching them fire safety. These experiences were included in the “Trail to Adventure” program geared for first year campers. These three Scouts also completed many requirements for Tenderfoot, Second, and First Class.
Jason worked his way from non-swimmer to beginner on his aquatics buddy tag.
Mr. Krauss earned the first year “Scout Leaders Merit Badge” by completing 13 requirements ranging from participating in shooting events to completing a service project. He also completed his trainings in New Leader Essentials, Scout Leader Specific, Outdoor Skills, Safe Swim Defense, and Safety Afloat.
Mr. Squires did a spectacular job improving the aesthetics of our site by creating a rock wall while clearing MANY of the nuisance rocks from below foot. He also made many important contacts for our Troop, including an adult leader from Troop 166 who also happened to be merit badge counselor for numerous badges, many of which our boys were able to earn beyond Camp Minsi offerings.
Clean Camper: We held daily Troop tent inspections in preparation of the daily camp-wide inspections held by the Staff. The Troop awarded the tents the “Clean Camper” award based on trash pick-up and tent neatness. Clean Campers were:
Monday – Chad F. and Jason F. Tuesday – Brendan L. and Andrew S. Wednesday – Jeremiah K. and Dillon P. Thursday – Brendan L. and Andrew S. Friday – Tie – Brendan L. and Andrew S. / Jeremiah K. and Dillon P.
On Thursday, our Troop was in a 5-way tie for the cleanest campsite in Camp. We had a perfect score of 90 and got to record our name on a plaque that remains in Camp for the entire season.
The only downfall of the week was a case of a stomach bug that effected a few of our boys, including Rob W. who had to be taken home Friday morning. We hope he is feeling better!!
Congratulations again, and thank you all for making Camp Minsi ’08 a wonderful experience for all. A special thanks to SPL David Thatcher and ASPL Mike Franco for providing invaluable leadership throughout the week.
Have a great remainder of the summer.
Troop 174 meets every Friday, during the school year, 7:30 - 9:00pm, American Legion on Ball Park Rd. Dingmans Ferry, PA.
