Valley View Group Campsite . November 12th / 14th. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Bushkill, PA
We setup on the usual Friday evening. Seven Scouts and four adults brought bicycles for a 12 mile McDade Trail ride on Saturday. We had rescheduled this trip twice. Our first try was to include kayaks but that was a month ago. We are now camping when there was ice in the puddles and frost on the tents in the morning. Our second attempt was canceled due to too many sports and after school activities. It is now mid November, and the last available weekend for Valley View. The Park Service is closing the Group Camp Site for the Winter. We could not have chosen a better weekend! Yes, it was cold at night, but it made it into the 50's in the afternoon. Not a cloud in the sky nor a breeze at all. We trucked our bikes back to Dingmans, and took a leisurely 12 mile ride back to camp. The McDade Trail follows the Delaware River and winds thru the corn fields and the dense forest. It took us around four hours with about ten stops to re-group the Troop. One of which was for around an hour where we skipped rocks on the river, and two of the adults, who will remain nameless took a nap. Saturday evening around the campfire the scouts worked on the Family Life Merit Badge. We were also treated to a guest, as Walt Gursky stopped by to visit and had dinner with us. Early Saturday evening we watched the International Space Station cross 250 miles overhead speeding at 17,400 miles an hour. It was a great weekend, no mechanical breakdowns (bicycles) no injuries and no complaints. (from the scouts anyway) There may have been a moan from an adult or two. All in all "NOTHING BUT FUN" some scouts even managed to squeeze some fishing in.
